Wilkins Consulting presents Kanchan Ganda MD
Management of the Medically Compromised
Dental Patient, Including Sedation
Description
The medically compromised patient presents unusual challenges on different levels for the dental professional. Under normal circumstances, dentistry can be challenging enough. When you add to that the medical, psychological, and emotional issues that are part of treating the medically compromised patient (MCP), the tasks at hand can feel daunting.
Many talented, caring dental professionals are hesitant to treat medically compromised patients for fear of lack of knowledge about both the medical as well as emotional issues that often come with this type of patient. If you would like to develop confidence in treating this population, while improving your medical competency and communication skills, this is the program for you.
This two-part program will provide participants with the skills to assess and manage a medically compromised patient effectively in the dental setting. Learn to communicate clearly and create a sense of safety to support both you and the patient in learning the “untold story” – their background and how you can help them – which is vital to a successful doctor/patient relationship. Not only will these skills serve you with medically compromised patients, but with your more typical patients as well.
Participants in this course will obtain the most current updates concerning the management of the medically compromised dental patient, including updates on medications, common medical illnesses, associated laboratory tests, and deviations in care from normal.
There will be a specific discussion of anesthetics, analgesics, and antibiotics (AAA) commonly used in dentistry. The discussion will focus on drug clearance in the presence of impaired vital organ status, especially liver and kidney, and appropriate dose or drug alternatives in the presence of disease states.
Medical conditions and medications that will be discussed include: Odontogenic infection; Coumadin therapy; pre-medication prophylaxis; diabetes; hepatitis/cirrhosis; kidney disease; pregnancy; chemotherapy/radiotherapy; bisphosphonates & osteonecrosis risk assessment along with prevention Common clinical laboratory test results will be used to evaluate the control level of the above disease states/medications, so deviation(s) in dental therapy for optimal outcome can be implemented.

Ratti Handa, DMD purchased a solo practice in Acton Massachusetts to pursue her dream of owning a true comprehensive care practice. In less than 9 months utilizing the concepts taught in this workshop, Dr. Handa has taken her new practice from less than $30k per month to over $90k per month. More importantly she has accomplished this with minimal marketing, less than 400 active patients, and a true focus on comprehensive care dentistry. Dr. Handa is also a guest lecturer at Tufts Universtiy Dental School and is a faculty member of the Spears Faculty Club and the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry.
